Casey Hayward was a lockdown corner in 2018

There has been a lot of talk this year about how Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Casey Hayward has fallen off and is not the player we had grown used to watching on Sundays. There are some statistics that support that narrative to a degree and the eye test did suggest that he was not quite on the level he had been, but that level was “best cornerback in the NFL,” so there was a lot of room between that and becoming some sort of liability.

A Pro Football Focus tweet offers up an incredibly impressive stat that says people may have been writing Hayward off a little too soon. (the pick-two in Denver also said that)

Hayward this year has been second only to future Hall of Famer Richard Sherman in coverage snaps per reception allowed with a minimum of 350 coverage snaps played. The graphic says “lockdown,” and it is hard to think of a better adjective to apply to Hayward this season.
