No changes to the coaching staff might be the definition of insanity
While some vocal fans are calling for Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien’s head on a platter, O’Brien himself is lobbying for the jobs of those around him.
In a piece over at USA Today, Bill O’Brien is quoted stumping for his guys:
Bill O’Brien
“I think we have a really strong staff,” O’Brien said. “I think when you look at — I really like this staff. I believe in the core of this staff. When you look at Brad Seely and the difference he made on special teams, RAC (Romeo Crennel), he’s been such a great coach for us here. Mike Devlin has done an excellent job of working with that offensive line every single day to chip away, get better and improve.”
It’s pretty solid to buy into Special Teams Coordinator Brad Seeley. This year produced the league’s highest point scoring kicker, and some very impressive field position gains for the Texans without any of the morale killing mistakes of years past.
And, Romeo Crennel has managed to do a better than average job with the defense, despite multiple key injuries and never once having a solid corps of cornerbacks to choose from for a whole game.
But, Mike Devlin... that’s a whole other topic.
The real bit of this to be alarmed with is the lack of mention of needing an Offensive Coordinator to get the most from DeShaun Watson, DeAndre Hopkins and crew. Bill O’Brien hasn’t shown the ability to wear both the Head Coach and OC caps effectively, yet he seems to think they did just fine getting by with an offense that should have ranked in the top five based on firepower but didn’t even make the top ten. Granted, if Mike Devlin had Duane Brown, Brandon Brooks and a few other offensive lineman Rick Smith sent away, things might have looked differently.
With Watson, Hopkins and Lamar Miller there’s no excuse for the sheer number of drives that stalled out. The Texans ranked 24th in 3rd down conversions in 2018 and 29th in red zone touchdowns, hardly the sort of stats you’d find on a team that doesn’t need a new offensive coordinator.
While we can make all the injury/Rick Smith RosterGate/bad luck/blind ref excuses in the world, at the end of the day, handing the keys to this Ferrari back to the guy who can’t get it out of 1st gear might truly be the definition of insanity.
What do you think? Is it time to overhaul the coaching staff? Based on the Red Zone Play Poll yesterday, more than 50% of Texans fans think it is. Who would you send packing, bring in, coach up or cast off? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
