We might as well get used to this
As we will continue to do occasionally during the buildup to the 2019 NFL Draft, let’s check what some of the recent NFL mock drafts are predicting for the New York Giants.
All of the mocks listed below have been updated with Senior Bowl performances in mind. Four of the six mocks have the Giants taking Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. That’s no surprise. Haskins is almost certainly going to be the player most often mocked to the Giants throughout the entire process.
One mock passed on Haskins and went for Duke quarterback Daniel Jones. Only one of our six mocks listed went in a non-quarterback direction at No. 6.
Mocking the Draft (Kadar) — Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
This is really the first pick in the draft that shouldn’t be up for much debate. The Giants could take Haskins and groom him behind Eli Manning for a season. That’s what the Chiefs did with Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. Surely Manning won’t be playing in New York after the 2019 season.
Walter Football — Daniel Jones, QB, Duke
The Giants grab their replacement for Eli Manning. Some around the NFL think the history of David Cutcliffe and the Mannings will lead to Jones being the Giants’ desired quarterback.
Jones completed 61 percent of his passes in 2018 for 2,674 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also missed two games with a collarbone injury. The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder has good size, pocket presence and a quality arm, plus is an intelligent signal-caller. Jones received excellent preparation for the NFL from head coach David Cutcliffe. As a 3-year starter, Jones enters the NFL having played in 36 games.
Interestingly, Walter Football’s Charlie Campbell opts for Jones here with Haskins still on the board. In this scenario, Tom Coughlin and the Jacksonville Jaguars land Haskins at No. 7.
The Draft Network (Crabbs) — Cody Ford, OT, Oklahoma
The narratives around the Giants are getting old. “They should’ve picked a quarterback last year!” “Eli is cooked!” It’s pretty tiresome to battle the same narratives despite their pick being so successful.
Whether you like it or not, the Giants are ready to ride with Eli. Again. And to be quite frank, I’d rather deal with another season of Eli and a 2020 1st-round rookie than invest in any of these passers: there’s no sure thing.
So why not continue to build the infrastructure on offense so that Eli’s heir, whoever he is, will have as easy a life as possible?
TDN’s Kyle Crabbs deals with the reality here that it looks like the Giants are ready to ride with Eli Manning again, even though they know they need to find a successor. The other reality is they might not see a quarterback worth a top six pick in a class that has been judged to be wanting at the position.
CBS Sports (Wilson) — Haskins
Yes, Drew Lock was the best quarterback at the Senior Bowl but Dwayne Haskins remains our top quarterback in this draft class. Yes, he only attempted 40 passes before last season, but if Eli Manning is indeed coming back in 2019, Haskins can spend a year on clipboard duty.
