Who’s left? Who’s worth it?
With Wednesday night’s news that the New York Jets are hiring Adam Gase as their new head coach, there doesn’t appear to be a favorite to land the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator job. The team has given no indications of what direction they plan on going, nor have we even heard the slightest of rumors on which coaches they are interviewing (or want to interview).
It’s a rough place to be in as a fan. The team’s choice for their offensive coordinator will likely be the most important move the franchise makes this offseason, and we have no idea where the team is leaning right now. Of course, we all have our favorites and we all have our least favorites. So today’s Question of the Day is:
Of the remaining candidates, who is your favorite choice for next Lions offensive coordinator?
My answer: Last time I answered this question, I picked Freddie Kitchens (as did 15 percent of readers). Since then, Kitchens has been hired as the next Browns head coach. Adam Gase received a whopping 48 percent of the vote.
There aren’t a ton of remaining candidates that really blow me away, but one name that emerged as a head coaching candidate that has surprised and intrigued me is Rams quarterback coach Zac Taylor.
Obviously having worked under Sean McVay for the past two years gives Taylor a shiny coat that has attracted anyone caught under the Rams’ offensive spell. But Taylor also has real offensive coordinator experience as a midseason replacement for the Dolphins in 2015 and a full year at the University of Cincinnati. And at 35 years old, he still qualifies for that “young, bright mind” category that seems so en vogue at the moment.
The question, like it was with Gase, is will he be available? There are two remaining head coaching jobs left: the Bengals and the Dolphins. There were reports that the Bengals interviewed Taylor, and the fact that they haven’t chosen anyone could be a sign that they’re waiting for him to become available—obviously they can’t hire him until the Rams are out of the playoffs.
Another name that intrigues me is Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken, but I’m not completely sold yet.
