I come bearing gifts.
Mock drafts and free agent lust—that’s what football is for fans from now until late April as all but two teams have begun their offseasons. To coincide with this, websites are pushing out all kinds of content, sometimes infantile and squabbling. There’s mock drafts, like the ones discussed here before (and another that’ll be discussed later this afternoon). And there’s free agency information.
For free agency, here’s a list of all the current upcoming NFL free agents for this spring according to Rotoworld. This list will change as franchise tags and roster cuts are made. It’s still the place to start if you want to see who should be available this offseason, and it’s something worth bookmarking for the entirety of free agency.
For salary cap information, you can check Over The Cap and Spotrac. Both are useful in their own ways. Over The Cap is better at showing salary cap changes and projecting the future, while Spotrac is better at providing current free agent information and past contracts.
Oh, and Pro Football Focus released their top 50 NFL Free Agents. They had Jadeveon Clowney ranked 6th and Tyrann Mathieu 25th. On Clowney, PFF wrote:
The physical tools are off the charts, and we love the way he’s progressed every year grade-wise, but the pass-rushing still isn’t at an elite level. His 78.8 pass-rushing grade this past season was a career high. Still, he’s a movable chess piece and elite run defender who might actually be at his best rushing the passer from the interior.
On the Honey Badger, they had this to say:
Mathieu had to take a prove it deal after the injuries piled up and he was cut in Arizona. Mathieu proved he’s still more than capable of making plays around the line of scrimmage. While he looked uncomfortable as a deep safety at times, he earned the fourth-best run-defense grade of any safety and notched the seventh-most stops. Not even 27 yet, Mathieu looks over his injuries woes.
Read the whole list to see what PFF had to say about other prospective free agents, like Sheldon Richardson who would be a fine 3-4 defensive end and could actually provide something of an interior pass rush, or Tyrell Williams, who would be some nice Will Fuller V injury insurance.
