49ers get Allen, Cardinals get Bosa in CBS Sports mock draft

We had some fun with Nick Bosa going to the 49ers, now Chris Trapasso returns with logic.

While the possibility of Ohio State pass-rusher Nick Bosa going to the San Francisco 49ers is no longer asinine, that doesn’t mean it’s a slam dunk, locked in pick we can bet the farm on. There’s still a long ways until the draft and until the NFL Combine. Until we get to the nitty-gritty we won’t know if Quinnen Williams is the better pick for the Arizona Cardinals to merit passing over Bosa.

And that’s where this morning’s mock draft comes in. Back to the safe picks, CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso put together a mock where Bosa goes to the Arizona Cardinals and Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen goes to the 49ers. Here’s the reasoning behind the Bosa pick for Arizona:

Toyed with the idea of Josh Allen at No. 1, but until he blows the doors off Lucas Oil Stadium at the combine, Bosa is back to the top spot.

and then at No. 2 is Josh Allen to the 49ers:

49ers fans would be pleased with Allen at No. 2, and edge rusher is a big need for San Francisco. With more consistent hand work, Allen can be a superb pro.

So Trapasso used logic. Darn it. Trepasso has put together mocks in the past where the 49ers walk away with Nick Bosa, but not this time. While this is an option that is far from off the table, he makes that point we’ve been hammering this week: The NFL Combine could change everything. So many hopeful players were destroyed by poor Combine performances (hi there, Manti Te’o!). Bosa is such a generational player that the Cardinals passing over him could be a damning move for their front office.

That said, Bosa has said he wants to play with his hand in the dirt and expressed desire to go to the 49ers. If the Cardinals decide it’s not worth the 4-3 to 3-4 transition (given how often teams play in nickel nowadays it can’t be that huge) they could go grab Williams or Josh Allen (who is much better suited for a 3-4 since he can drop into coverage when needed).
