Mike Singletary returns to coaching on Sunday

The former 49ers head coach has taken on the same role with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football.

The Alliance of American Football kicked off its inaugural season on Saturday, and it wasn’t half bad. The quality is not NFL level, but there is some intriguing talent that will draw viewers in during the offseason.

It should be no surprise that the Steve Spurrier-coached Orlando Apollos were the big winner on Saturday, beating the Atlanta Legends 40-6. The San Antonio Commanders won a slightly uglier matchup, beating the San Diego Fleet 15-6. Keith Reaser (Apollos) was the most notable ex-49ers player to see action, finishing with five tackles and coverage on two incomplete passes.

Sunday brings the other half of the league in action, and we get a particularly familiar face. The Birmingham Iron host the Memphis Express at 1 p.m. PT, with the latter team coached by Mike Singletary. This is Singletary’s first coaching job since serving as a defensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams. Singletary had served as 49ers interim head coach in 2008, and then formal head coach in 2009 and 2010.

Singletary’s time as 49ers head coach did not go well, but he has been pushing to get another opportunity. The AAF is promoted as a league of second and third chances for players, but it could help coaches raise their profile with NFL teams. If Singletary can put together a respectable showing in Memphis, maybe he gets another shot at least as an assistant.

If you are looking to watch Singletary’s AAF debut, it will air on CBS Sports Network. The other game on Sunday features Arizona hosting Salt Lake at 5 p.m. PT on NFL Network. If you don’t have either cable channel, the AAF app live streams all the games. You can download the app on Android or iPhone.

Did anybody watch one or both games on Saturday? Plan on watching today?

And just because....
