Arrowheadlines: Chiefs defensive quality control coach moving on

Chiefs headlines for Monday, February 18.

SOURCE: Rutgers is hiring Kansas City Chiefs defensive quality control coach Jay Valai as cornerbacks coach | ESPN

Valai, a former safety at Wisconsin, replaces Henry Baker, who briefly was with Rutgers before taking a position with the New York Giants. Before the Chiefs, Valai spent two seasons as a defensive quality control assistant at Georgia. He knows Chris Ash from their time together at Wisconsin.

Long: In a time of change, some things remain the same at Daytona | Yahoo! Sports

“Moments,” Bowyer said this week. “No different than when I go to a football game. The Super Bowl sucked and I am a football fan. Again, you go watch the (Kansas City) Chiefs games, I was lucky enough to be a Chiefs fan this year and it was a highlight reel one after another with (quarterback Patrick) Mahomes and (Tyreek) Hill.

Dolphins hire ex-Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, the league’s 2016 executive of year | Miami Herald

He joins a Dolphins organization that would gladly take the type of playmakers McKenzie identified and selected while with the Raiders.

McKenzie is the second high-profile hire Grier has made since being named the Dolphins’ head of football operations on New Year’s Eve. Grier also convinced Marvin Allen to join him as assistant general manager. Allen helped build the loaded Chiefs roster, serving as Kansas City’s director of college scouting when the team took MVP Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Kareem Hunt and many more.

2017, Texas Tech: Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB

2014, Auburn: Rams OL Greg Robinson, Chiefs DL Dee Ford

2013, Central Michigan: Eric Fisher, Chiefs OL

Franchise tag candidates: DeMarcus Lawrence tops no-brainers | NFL

Dee Ford, OLB/DE, Kansas City Chiefs: General manager Brett Veach already announced Ford will be back, with the franchise tag the most likely route to bringing the declaration to fruition. A one-year deal makes sense from the Chiefs’ perspective, considering how Ford’s contract-year explosion (13 sacks, seven forced fumbles) was a pleasant surprise, not unlike Lawrence’s breakout year. Ford staying probably means that Justin Houston is out the door.

NFL Network named this Patriots win as best game of 2018 season | Yahoo! Sports

NFL Network is counting down its top games of the 2018 season, and unsurprisingly, the New England Patriots are well-represented on the list.

The latest unveilings came Sunday, when NFL Network tweeted it’s No. 3 Game of the Year was the Patriots’ thrilling 43-40 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 6 at Gillette Stadium.

Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid end their collusion case against the NFL | SB Nation

The settlement doesn’t definitively mean that Kaepernick and Reid were able to prove collusion, nor does it mean that the NFL was able to completely disprove Kaepernick’s and Reid’s claims.

This gives Kaepernick and Reid the chance to recover on lost wages during their unemployment. Kaepernick should get a large sum of money as the result of his prolonged unemployment.

The NFL’s most (and least) accurate quarterbacks, according to Pro Football Focus | USA Today

1. Drew Brees

2. Tom Brady

3. Philip Rivers

4. Matt Ryan

5. Alex Smith

Not a lot of surprises here. Well, except for Alex Smith, though a lot of his placement on the list has to do with his conservative nature. According to PFF, Smith was most accurate on throws it charted as “checkdowns” and “scheme throws,” which include screens and shovel passes.

Jaylen Watkins, Chargers agree to 1-year deal | ESPN

The Los Angeles Chargers agreed to terms with safety Jaylen Watkins on a one-year deal, keeping him in the fold for the 2019 season, sources confirmed to ESPN on Saturday.

NFL Teams That Should Completely Rebuild This Offseason | Bleacher Report

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders already started doing so last year by parting ways with Michael Crabtree, Khalil Mack, Amari Cooper and Bruce Irvin. Might as well keep it up.

All of the ingredients are there in terms of draft capital (five first-round picks in the next two years) and cap space (they’re projected to have more money to spend than all but six other teams), and they already have a franchise quarterback in place. Now it’s just about building up the remainder of the roster.

Tim Tebow reveals the advice he gave to Kyler Murray before Murray picked the NFL over MLB | CBS Sports

“You know what? Don’t do it for your agents, or your friends and sometimes necessarily even your family,” Tebow said he told Murray, per ESPN. “Do it for what’s on your heart, and don’t let other people define you. You’re going to have all these coaches that you look up to and everybody else that’s going to tell you what they think, but what’s most important is following your heart and your passion. And so, I don’t know, hopefully he did that.”

Did Patrick Mahomes make trick shots cool? Yes, says the AAF

While the the NBA’s all-stars were flashing their own skills during the league’s showcase game in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday night, AAF quarterback Phillip Nelson of the San Diego Fleet had some tricks of his own that were — dare we say — inspired by Mahomes?

Redskins aren’t ruling out return for former Chiefs QB Alex Smith this season

Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith may not be ready for the start of the 2019 season, but he could return before the end of it, according to Washington Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams, who recently spoke to SiriusXM NFL Radio. The Chiefs traded Smith to the Redskins last offseason.

Tyreek Hill acknowledges and laughs at Tyreek Hill parody

Former Oregon State cornerback and semi-famous YouTuber Rahmel Dockery posted a video parody of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill to his Twitter account on Saturday.

The video pokes fun at Hill’s speed and his signature celebration—flashing the “peace” sign in opposing defenders’ faces.
