Arrowheadlines: Grading last year’s Chiefs draft class

Chiefs headlines for Friday, February 15.

The latest

Willie Roaf: Chiefs primed for Super Bowl run, but Patrick Mahomes should quit hoops | Kansas City Star

“So he’s got to watch it running up and down. He’s young, but you’ve got to watch it running up and down that hardwood and changing direction and stuff. What if you come down the wrong way? They’re about to give you $200 million (contract), I don’t think they want you playing a lot of basketball.”

2018 NFL rookie report card: Ranking each team’s class, 1 to 32 | NFL

Free agency fits: Le’Veon Bell to Jets? Earl Thomas to Cowboys? | NFL

Tyrann Mathieu, S: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS. Mathieu signed a one-year, $7 million prove-it deal with Houston -- and boy, did he prove it. The veteran tied a career high with 89 tackles while dispelling durability concerns, starting 16 games for a second straight season, and chipping in three sacks and two picks. As a playmaking presence whose competitiveness stands out, Mathieu would slot nicely into the Chiefs’ secondary. He’d team well with veteran safety Eric Berry on a Kansas City defense that ranked 31st overall and against the pass last season.

Who Could Get the Franchise Tag? Candidates for All 32 NFL Teams | Sports Illustrated

Kansas City OLB Dee Ford, as recently as last week, said he’d be fine playing under the franchise tag. It’s not a bad attitude to have for a player who is entering a season with a new defensive coordinator and (potentially) a drastically different front less advantageous to putting up sack numbers. He’s the name to watch, though, as we pointed out a week ago, Steve Spagnuolo’s entrance onto the scene could be a warning sign for both of the Chiefs’ edge rushers.

“St. Patrick Mahomes” shirts on sale soon | 41 KSHB

Along with Mahomes and Hy-Vee, Ultimate Athletic Sportswear made special Mahomes St. Patrick’s Day T-shirts.

Artists at the sportswear company put the design together, then Mahomes’ team approved it. The shirts say, “St. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City’s Finest MVP.”

Chiefs President Mark Donovan Receives National Service Award for His Work with City Year Kansas City | Chiefs.com

Under Donovan’s leadership as Chairman of the Board and with the help of the Hunt Family Foundation, the program impacts more than 4,000 students every year.

Travis Kelce makes little boy’s Valentine’s Day wish come true | Fox 4 KC

When Bryant Grubbs, who is from Casey, Iowa, showed his mom his Kelce-inspired Valentine’s Day box he said, “Mom, how cool would it be if Travis Kelce saw this.”

His mom shared that conversation on Facebook along with photos of her son and his awesome box. A friend spotted the post and shared a screenshot on Twitter. Weber’s tweet caught the attention of the Chiefs’ tight end.

“Kids are awesome… this just made my day!” Kelce responded.

Around the league

Denver Broncos veterans approve of Joe Flacco trade | NFL

“Big move by (John) Elway,’’ receiver Emmanuel Sanders said in a text to Mike Klis of 9NEWS. “Veteran leader who has won the big game. We also have money to spend too in free agency as well. Looking forward to seeing more pieces put into place.’’

A quarterback buyer’s market? Why this NFL offseason is rare | ESPN

This year, for the first time in recent memory, the NFL’s quarterback supply seems to be outpacing demand. An informal survey of agents and team executives around the league found the list of teams looking for a starting quarterback to be a surprisingly short one, replete with caveats.

Alliance of American Football tried wooing QB Colin Kaepernick | ESPN

A source told the Associated Press that Kaepernick wanted $20 million or more to consider playing with the league that had its debut last weekend.

All AAF players received three-year, $250,000 nonguaranteed contracts but could earn more via bonuses.

NBA’s Adam Silver: I ‘haven’t given any thought’ to becoming NFL commissioner | Yahoo! Sports

Since Silver took over the NBA, league revenues have nearly doubled, from $4.8 billion to a projected $9.1 billion. Over that period, team valuations have increased by 267 percent according to Forbes magazine, to an average of $1.9 billion.

Saints’ Alex Okafor to enter FA after hitting sack mark | NFL

Another veteran pass rusher appears on track to enter unrestricted free agency when the league’s new calendar year begins on March 13.

New Orleans Saints defensive end Alex Okafor’s contract was updated with language in late December to reflect the deal automatically voids the final year on the last day of the 2018 league year, according to Nick Underhill of The Advocate.

HOF Voters: Rob Gronkowski May Not Be 1st-Ballot Entrant If Patriots TE Retires | Bleacher Report

Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reported, “Having consulted five members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee (there’s 48 on the panel), none of them would firmly commit to the notion [of Gronkowski getting in on the first ballot]. He’ll get in, there’s not much doubt about that. It’s just that no one is quite sure when. He might get passed over a few times, just like Ty Law.”

Does Pierre Garçon make sense for the Chiefs?

Garçon could provide a veteran presence in a locker room that could use it. But while he has 11 years of NFL experience, he really hasn’t provided much production over the course of that span. Garçon has eclipsed 800 yards only three times, and he has missed half the regular season in each of the past two season due to injuries.

The Boardroom: Which Chiefs stay and which Chiefs go?

Defensive line

So many decisions to make here. We’re tagging Dee Ford and letting him prove it another year. Justin Houston’s time in Kansas City is coming to an end. We are actively shopping him at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in the hopes that someone will make the move to take on the $14 million on his that would go with him to his next destination. We made a surprise cut on the defensive line that saved over $2 million in cap space. With that space, we targeted the recently cut Vinny Curry to help bolster the pass rush.

Chiefs stock report: whose stock rose— or fell — this past season?

Stock UP

Damien Williams- The season started off slow for this particular Williams. Buried on the depth chart behind last season’s NFL rushing leader, Damien wasn’t involved in the offense (at all) until mid-December. Who would have guessed he’d score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship game? Damien earned his new contract and a longer look in 2019.
