Singleton becomes the second coach hired from the Raiders this offseason. What does he bring to the table?
Offensive line coach Jim Turner isn’t the only veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces hired by the Bengals this offseason.
Jemal Singleton was hired as the team’s running backs coach. He replaces Kyle Caskey, who held the position for the past five seasons. Caskey was one of the first assistants let go by the team shortly before the rumors of Zac Taylor’s hiring became public.
Singleton, 43, was the running backs coach for the Oakland Raiders last season and will reunite with Bengals’ offensive coordinator Brian Callahan in Cincinnati. Callahan was the Raiders’ quarterbacks coach in 2018.
Before his coaching career began at the turn of the century, Singleton played college football for the Air Force Academy. He was a running back and played for three years. He remains one of the few players in Air Force history to be a two-time captain, so it’s no surprise that he got into coaching almost immediately after his playing days were through.
He started as a prep assistant for Air Force in 2000, but got the call to serve in 2001. He was stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville, Florida for two years. In 2003, he returned to Colorado to resume his coaching career with the Air Force.

After 11 years coaching and serving with the Air Force, Singleton took the jump to a power five team in Oklahoma State. His four years as their running backs coach got him a promotion to become the special teams coordinator and running backs coach for Arkansas for a season. He got the call to the NFL in 2016 and spent two seasons with the Colts before joining Jon Gruden’s staff with the Raiders in 2018.
The running back position remains one of the strongest units on the Bengals’ roster, with starter Joe Mixon, veteran Giovani Bernard and 2018 fourth-round pick Mark Walton making up the core of the group. Singleton will have the most talented group of backs he’s worked with at the NFL level in his young career, now he’s tasked with getting the most out of them.
