Round 6 of the 2019 NFL Draft belongs to the Bengals.
As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals have received three compensatory picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.
On Friday, the league announced the compensatory picks for all 32 NFL teams. For the Bengals, they will get a whopping three sixth-round picks this year, which is what they were projected to get.
Last offseason, the four biggest contracts the Bengals saw their free agents receive on the open market belonged to Andre Smith ($4,000,000), Chris Smith ($3,900,000), AJ McCarron ($3,950,000) and Jeremy Hill ($1,331,250).
Because the NFL can only award 32 total compensatory picks, Hill’s earnings did not project the Bengals with a fourth pick. It also didn’t help he missed most of the 2018 season with a torn ACL.
The irony with one of those sixth-round picks is that it comes from the team losing Smith to the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 offseason, only for him to be cut and re-sign with the Bengals midway through the 2018 season.
Similar to Michael Johnson back in 2015, the Bengals allowed Smith to walk in free agency only to sign him within the calendar year. The Bengals got a compensatory pick in the third round that year for Johnson after he signed a five-year deal worth $8.75 million per year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And thanks to the Bene Benwikere trade with the Dallas Cowboys made back in 2017, along with the Bengals’ own sixth-rounder in 2019, the Bengals now have five sixth-round draft picks this year.
