Chris Maragos released by Eagles

Former special teams captain is gone.

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran safety and former special teams captain Chris Maragos, according to an official announcement from the team. The news was first reported by NFL insider Field Yates.

This development is a little curious because it was previously thought Maragos was going to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 13. As it turns out, that was still the case. Yates reports the Eagles cut Maragos to give him a head start on becoming a free agent:

Maragos hasn’t played in a game since he suffered a PCL injury during an October 2017 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. He underwent a second knee surgery in December 2018. It’s fair to wonder if the 32-year-old Maragos will ever play again.

Maragos originally signed with the Eagles during the 2014 offseason. He was a special teams standout and he even contributed at safety in emergency situations during his five years with Philly. His efforts were commendable and he’ll be leaving the Eagles as one of the members of Philly’s first ever Super Bowl team.

The Eagles put out the following official statement:

We are grateful for Chris Maragos’ contributions to the Philadelphia Eagles over the last five seasons. A captain on our Super Bowl LII-winning team, Chris’ leadership on and off the field and his ability to connect with teammates, coaches and fans made him a valuabl member of this organization and the community. Chris solidified himself as one of the best special teams performers in the NFL and played a crucial role in the success of our team. We wish Chris and his family the best.

Good luck with whatever comes next for you, Mr. Maragos.
