Our last unrestricted free agent.
Our next undrafted free agent preview looks at CB Phillip Gaines.
How and When He Joined the Browns: The Browns claimed Gaines off waivers last November from the Buffalo Bills, after he had spent the first four years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Productivity Level Last Season: In 4 games with the Browns, Gaines logged 9 tackles. In 7 games prior to that with the Bills, he registered 30 tackles and 2 passes defended, starting 6 games. Gaines played 41 defensive snaps and 55 special teams snaps with Cleveland.
Why Keeping Him Could Make Sense: GM John Dorsey selected Gaines in 2014 with a fifth-round draft pick, so he should be well-familiar with whether Gaines is worth keeping around. He has started between 3-6 games per year in each of his first 5 seasons in the NFL.
What the Browns Should Do: Throughout his time in Kansas City, Gaines was inconsistent and often ended up on the injury list. If Cleveland keeps Gaines, it should be for the veteran minimum to let him compete for a job in camp. I have no allegiance to him, though.
Let us know below whether or not the team should try to re-sign Phillip Gaines!
