Colts should pursue Michael Crabtree

A big, physical receiver is atop of the Colts needs this offseason, so they should pursue the recently released Crabtree

It is no secret the Colts are extremely thin at wide receiver. The lack of a red-zone, physical presence was evident throughout the course of the season and hindered the Colts options in short-yardage situations.

Enter Michael Crabtree. The experienced receiver fits the bill of what the Colts need right now. He is big, 6’1”, 215, and has been a reliable touchdown producer in his career. Crabtree was most likely cut due to scheme fits. With new Ravens coordinator Greg Roman stating that the offense will be built around Lamar Jackson, the Ravens need elusive receivers capable of getting yards after the catch. Crabtree is the exact opposite of that. After Jackson was named the starter, Crabtree’s season went south quickly, as he never formed a connection with the young quarterback.

Crabtree would also be a fairly cheap add for the Colts. The contract he signed last year with the Ravens was for $21 million over 3 years. After his career worst season, he will likely come much cheaper for any team that wants him. However, the last time he had a traditional quarterback throwing the ball to him (2016 Derek Carr), he posted an 89 reception, 1,003 yards, 8 touchdown season.

If Ballard decides he is worth a shot, a contract paying $12 million over 2 years may land the receiver. A deal without any guaranteed money after the first year would prevent the Colts from having any commitment beyond 2019.

The Colts have a chance to fill a need on the team without overspending, and should consider taking it.
