The best defensive rookie in the National Football League this year, Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Derwin James, did not win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award. That honor has, instead, gone to the Indianapolis Colts’ linebacker Darius Leonard. That travesty was announced via Twitter:

Leonard had the benefit of playing a position that generates more counting stats that are recognizable to the kind of people that don’t actually pay close attention to the games being played. Derwin James was an elite player at multiple roles for the Chargers defense. James excelled at both safety spots, was able to line up as a linebacker, and was also one of the most efficient pass rushers in the NFL. It is not a huge surprise that as a defensive back he was snubbed for this award in favor of a linebacker, but it is still a joke that it happened.
James will have to content himself with all of the other honors he has already received this offseason, and perhaps he will find additional motivation from being passed over for another that he deserved.
