Falcons relationship status: It’s complicated
Hey, lovebirds! It’s Valentine’s Day, so what better way to start it then read about your first, unrequited love, the Atlanta Falcons? Eat all the courtesy candies in one fell swoop and indulge on Falcoholinks for Thursday.
Offseason Rumblings
Ah, the offseason. It’s cold, gloomy, dark, and for the most part, boring. It’s also the time to analyze and dissect the Atlanta Falcons ad nauseam — from roster projections to wishlists to flexing our mathematical muscles when calculating available cap space. The Falcons have already made this NFL-less time a bit more interesting by releasing a trio of tenured players, but what moves could be made next?
Grady Jarrett’s new contract is the top priority, but what becomes of Vic Beasley and a bulk of the offensive line is a little less clear. The team inked linebacker Bruce Carter to an extension earlier in the week and Steven Means is back on a one-year deal, so that’s a start, I suppose.
Owner Arthur Blank shed a bit of light on the team’s outlook this offseason, name-checking the O-line as a primary need to address, and signaled that Thomas Dimitroff and Dan Quinn are not necessarily a package deal. Intriguing.
Career Windows
Continuing our current Career Windows series, this week the focus is on Falcons stalwarts Devonta Freeman and Ricardo Allen.
The Falcons made Freeman the highest paid running back in the NFL not too long ago, but after missing the majority of the 2018 season with injury there’s certainly questions as to his long-term prospects with the team.
Ricardo Allen will also enter the upcoming season recovering from injury and toting a lucrative contract, but his immense value to the secondary should keep him in Atlanta through at least 2021.
Team Needs
Sports Illustrated’s Andy Benoit recently dropped a piece examining the neediest teams in the NFL, and in what feels extremely jinxy, named the Atlanta Falcons as the least needy team heading into 2019. The Falcons have a veritable chasm along the offensive line, so I guess if your offense is comprised of 8 players they don’t really have any glaring needs.
Oh well. Maybe with Benoit’s ranking in mind the Falcons will be reticent to sign a guy like Ray Edwards.
While Atlanta may not appear to have many holes to fill on paper, they still have 18 pending free agents, many of whom will hit the open market.
