Giants add pair of coaches to defensive staff

Vacancies on staff officially filled

The New York Giants on Monday officially filled a pair of vacancies on their defensive coaching staff.

Mike Dawson will replace Rob Leonard as outside linebackers coach after Leonard joined the Miami Dolphins. Henry Baker will take over from DeShea Townsend as assistant defensive backs coach. Townsend is now defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears.

Baker was cornerbacks coach at North Carolina last season. He had accepted a job as cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Rutgers last month. Baker coached previously at Rutgers, Delaware and East Stroudsburg.

Dawson was on the Philadelphia Eagles staff with Giants head coach Pat Shurmur and linebackers coach Bill McGovern from 2013-15. He coached the defensive line at Nebraska last season.

“We are thrilled to add Mike and Henry to our coaching staff,” Shurmur said in a statement released by the team. “They are both outstanding teachers, communicators and motivators. They are also great people, and we look forward to both of them contributing to our success.”
