Giants news, 1/20: Giants, Landon Collins not near long-term deal, per reports

“Very little talk or progress” on long-term deal

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

The clock is ticking on the Giants’ ability to keep star safety Landon Collins from hitting the free agent market, with the team having until March 5 to decide whether to use the franchise or transition tag on Collins for the 2019 season.

If reports that surfaced Tuesday are accurate, that might be the Giants’ only option for keeping Collins from testing his value on the open market. ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported Monday that the Giants and Collins are “not currently in active negotiations on a contract extension.” SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano reported that “there has been very little talk or progress on a long-term deal.”

Neither of those reports means there won’t be talks, or that a deal can’t get done. It just means the Giants might have to use the tag to make sure Collins is a Giant in 2019. By using the tag the Giants would have until July 15 to work out a long-term deal. If that doesn’t happen, Collins would have to play the 2019 season on the tag.

Best NFL Fits for 2019 Draft's Top Quarterbacks | Bleacher Report

Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller says Dwayne Haskins is the best fit for the Giants among quarterbacks in this class. He’s hardly alone. Here is what Miller says about Haskins and the Giants:

Dwayne Haskins, contrary to what Stephen A. Smith says, is a pocket passer with a strong arm and very good poise for a one-year starter. The New York Giants are looking for a quarterback to sit behind Eli Manning for another season, and Haskins can do that while learning more about the position after so few starts in college. He fits the Giants' idea of a big, strong, prototypical passer who can win from the pocket.

Giants' Anarumo front-runner for Bengals coordinator gig | New York Post

Defensive-backs coach Lou Anarumo is set to interview with the Cincinnati Bengals for their vacant defensive coordinator post. Anarumo is reportedly viewed as the “front-runner” to run the defense for new Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor, with whom Anarumo worked as part of the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff.
