The Kist & Solak Show #80!
If the Philadelphia Eagles trade up in the 2019 NFL Draft, who would they target? It’s been reported that they’ll aggressively approach free agency in search of a pass rusher, but what if that falls through? Will they carryover that same aggression into their draft process?
Out of the top edge rushers in this class, one that could take a slight tumble due to the depth of the position is the super talented Jachai Polite of Florida. Checking Polite’s recent draft stock, at least how the media views it, shows he could possibly be in striking distance.
- SBNation’s Dan Kadar mocked Polite 12th to the Green Bay Packers.
- NFL.com’s Charley Casserly mocked Polite 16th to the Carolina Panthers.
- CBS Sports’ Will Brinson mocked Polite 19th to the Tennessee Titans.
- Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler mocked Polite 21st to the Seattle Seahawks.
Benjamin Solak cited the Packers at the 12th overall selection as the tipping point. That’s where he, like Kadar, slotted Polite in his latest mock. It would provide the Packers with an instant upgrade and at least a long-term solution. If Polite slips past them, the Eagles should pick up the phone and start asking around for potential dance partners.
Last year, the 6’2”, 242-pound Polite racked up 19.5 tackles for a loss and 11 sacks, along with 4 pass breakups. In his evaluation of Polite, The Draft Network’s Kyle Crabbs had this to say about his overall game:
“…projects favorably as an impact pass rusher at the NFL level. Polite has an explosive first step, speed that accelerates through the turn, flexibility and short area suddenness that makes him very difficult to account for off the edge. Polite shines when he’s afforded room to stress Tackles, so wider alignments will be favorable to his pro forecast. Polite shows room to grow with better extension skills vs. the run.”
Wider alignments you say? Interesting. There are some who believe Polite is a scheme specific 3-4 outside linebacker and would keep him standing up. If the Eagles’ disagree with that strict assessment, they should be fawning over Polite’s double-digit sack potential.
Currently, Polite sits at the 19th best overall prospect on pre-Combine big board. This is tier above Clemson EDGE Clelin Ferrell and a tiny tick behind Clemson iDL Christian Wilkins. Depending on how things fall, all three could be in play.
With a draft so loaded at the top with pass rushers both inside and outside, the Eagles could chose to wait, stay put, and see who slips through the cracks. Or they may decide to be aggressive and ensure they land “their guy”.
