Starting on Tuesday February 12, CFL players can sign free agent deals with NFL teams. That means if the Jacksonville Jaguars are interested in any CFL players, they’re free to add them to their roster starting on Tuesday.
Why is that relevant to the Jaguars all the sudden this season?
The Jaguars worked out two different CFL veterans at the end of last season, both of which are pending free agents.
The Jaguars worked out Edmonton Eskimos quarterback Mike Reilly, however the 34-year-old is reportedly going to sign with the Detroit Lions. The former 2017 CFL MVP isn’t the big name the Jaguars showed interest in however, that would be former Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell.
The Jaguars had Mitchell in for a visit/workout in late December and were one of six known NFL teams to show interest and work him out with reports saying up to 10 NFL teams have inquired. Mitchell has been in the CFL since he went undrafted in 2012 and since then has won the Grey Cup twice, been the MVP of the game in both victories and has been named CFL MVP two of the last three seasons. During his time in the CFL he has thrown for over 24,000 yards with 150 touchdowns, 59 interceptions and a career passer rating of 102.9.
Now, do I think Mitchell is some hidden answer to the quarterback position? Probably not, but perhaps the 28-year-old CFL veteran is someone the Jaguars could view as a placeholder quarterback in lieu of going the Nick Foles, Joe Flacco, etc. route?
