For man teams in the NFL, who gets chosen for the next season of HBO’s Hard Knocks is a game of ‘Not it.’ There are a handful of teams that have no choice in the matter. If they haven’t been chosen in the past ten years, they didn’t make the playoffs the past two years, and don’t have a new coach, they can’t refuse.
The Lions and Raiders are among the few teams who won’t be able to refuse HBO’s cameras this offseason. Lions head coach would just like to put it out there that the Raiders would make a great choice.
“I think Jon Gruden is an excellent choice for that show,” Patricia said at Monday’s season ticket holder summit. “I think the Oakland Raiders and everything they’ve got going on right now would be fantastic viewing for everybody to watch.”
“Nobody wants to do it,” Lions GM Bob Quinn added. “Except Oakland.”
Other teams who can’t refuse are the Giants, 49ers, and Washington. But Patricia is right. The Raiders would make for some compelling television. In fact, it seems to make almost too much sense. There’s Jon Gruden as the head coach having just hired Mike Mayock as the GM, setting out on their final season in Oakland before heading for Las Vegas. That shit’s made for television.
The only reason HBO would have NOT to choose the Raiders is banking on the team once again missing the playoffs in 2019. Then in true Vegas style, they would let it ride in the hopes of cashing in big time with the same cast of characters preparing for their first season in Sin City.
