Should Browns take a look at Vinny Curry?

Veteran defensive end released on Tuesday after a disappointing season with Tampa Bay.

The Cleveland Browns need some reinforcements along the defensive line heading into the 2019 NFL season.

While much of the attention will be placed on the defensive tackle position, which currently only has Larry Ogunjobi as a viable option, the club can also use an upgrade at defensive end behind starters Myles Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah.

One name to potentially keep an eye on is veteran defensive end Vinny Curry, who was released on Tuesday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Curry spent one season with Tampa Bay after signing a three-year contract as a free agent. He was bothered by an ankle injury, which limited him to just 12 games (seven starts), and Curry finished the season with just 21 tackles and 2.5 sacks as he lost his starting job to Carl Nassib, who was cast off by the Browns in the final roster prior to the 2018 season.

Add it all up and Curry posted the worst season of his career, according to Pro Football Focus:

That certainly did not help his cause with the Buccaneers, who are moving on from Curry in part because they are switching to a 3-4 base defense under new defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Prior to joining the Buccaneers, Curry spent six seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he posted 22 sacks in 84 games. He was only a starter his final season with the Eagles, in 2017, so he may be better suited for a backup role, which is something the Browns could offer him.

Curry will turn 31 just prior to the start of training camp, which could be a cause for concern if he wants to be a full-time starter. But if the prospect of joining the young group of Garrett, Ogbah and Genard Avery as a veteran presence and situational pass rusher is appealing, Curry could be someone that Browns general manager John Dorsey could take a look at in free agency.
