The two-round mock goes for offensive and defensive line help
The 2018-19 regular season is over and done with, and that means we’re into the offseason in the National Football League. And, of course, with the offseason comes several hundred thousand mock drafts. . .seemingly. . .to try to get a feel for what the Minnesota Vikings (and the 31 NFL teams that don’t matter as much) will do at this April’s selection meeting.
Dan Kadar of Mocking the Draft has his first mock of the offseason, and it’s a two-round projection. That’s enough to give the Vikings help on both the offensive and the defensive line.
With the 18th overall pick, Kadar has the Vikings going after Kansas State offensive lineman Dalton Risner, who made quite the impression at the Senior Bowl last week.
Risner is the type of mean and versatile blocker the Vikings need to find this offseason. He can push for the starting right tackle job, but he fits just about anywhere on the inside for Minnesota. His versatility would allow the Vikings to start the best five linemen on a weekly basis.
Well, I think we can safely assume that Risner wouldn’t be playing right tackle for the Vikings, unless the purple wanted to entertain the idea of moving Brian O’Neill to left tackle. I would think they’d be inclined to keep him at one spot for a while. . .a novel idea if there ever was one. . .which means Risner would be looking at a guard spot. Given that that’s where the Vikings require the most help, that sounds like as good an idea as any.
With pick #50, Kadar switches to the defensive line and Miami (FL) defensive tackle Gerald Willis.
Willis has some off-field issues, but on it he’s a terror in the middle. The Vikings need a three-technique tackle this offseason, and Willis could help fill that spot.
A former five-star recruit, Willis started out at the University of Florida, but was dismissed from the team for the issues that are mentioned above. He then transferred to “The U,” and this past year was named a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated. Our friends at Blogging the Boys took a look at him, and you can see that article here.
We’re going to be looking at a lot of mock drafts going forward here, folks. . .we’ve got quite a while until we get to 25 April and the 2019 NFL Draft, after all.
