Monday Cheese Curds: Packers should not trade for Antonio Brown

There is some upside to adding AB, but the risks are just far too numerous.

It’s the situation that hangs like a cloud over everything this NFL offseason: what will the Pittsburgh Steelers do with Antonio Brown?

Of even more interest to Green Bay Packers fans is if Green Bay actually could trade for the unhappy wide receiver.

To quote Ian Malcolm, “your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

The Packers clearly have the ammunition to trade for Brown. They currently own two first round picks and two fourth round picks and could always send a player or two to the Steelers to sweeten the deal.

That said, should they even make an offer? The Steelers have long been like the Packers in which they don’t usually tolerate diva behavior and stars who put themselves above the team. The Rooney family is held in extremely high esteem around the league for many reasons and that’s just one of them.

The other concern is would Brown be content to be to play behind Davante Adams? Adams and Rodgers have developed a very strong connection and the quarterback’s trust issues with receivers are well known. Would Rodgers immediately welcome Brown into the mold as a veteran star or would he have to earn Rodgers’ trust like a rookie would? The Packers haven’t added much if any veteran receiver help in Rodgers’ tenure that it is hard to predict.

Throw in Brown’s salary demands and there is a strong case to make that Green Bay should pass on Brown. The team needs immediate help on defense and a veteran pass rusher would make more of an impact immediately than Brown would.

It’s a tempting notion, but Green Bay would be wise to let Brown go somewhere else.

There’s more on a potential AB trade plus Rodgers makes a new friend at Pebble Beach in today’s cheese curds.
