[Podcast]: Non-quarterback options for Giants at No. 6 in 2019 NFL Draft

What are the options if quarterback isn’t the pick for the Giants?

The New York Giants have to select a quarterback when it is time to turn in the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, right?

That was what we thought a year ago when the Giants held the second overall pick with Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen on the board. Instead of selecting one of the quarterbacks, they selected running back Saquon Barkley.

A year later, the Giants find themselves in a remarkably similar position, holding the sixth overall pick and their need at quarterback that much clearer. But what if they, once again, don’t draft a quarterback? That was the question Dan Pizzuta and I posed to ourselves for the latest installment of the Big Blue Big Board.

Rather than teasing out the possible ramifications of drafting another position, we decided to look at some other possible options for how they could spend the pick.

We did set down a couple rules for ourselves. The first is that Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, Ohio State EDGE Nick Bosa, and Kentucky EDGE Josh Allen would all be off the board. That was based on the assumption that, regardless of what else happens, those three are locks to be drafted in the top-5.

From there we established a pair of scenarios:

1) Two teams trade into the first five picks and draft Dwayne Haskins and Kyler Murray.

or

2) One or both of the quarterbacks are available, but not the highest graded player available and the Giants stick to their board.

Potential options

  1. Trading back - We discuss why this should always be on the table.
  2. Ed Oliver (DL, Houston)
  3. Brian Burns (EDGE, Florida State)
  4. Clelin Ferrell (EDGE, Clemson)
