Raiders announce five new coaching hires

After losing several position coaches to other teams, the Raiders made a series of coaching moves official today.

Brentson Buckner - Defensive Line

Kirby Wilson - Running Backs

Taver Johnson - Assistant Defensive Backs

John Morton - Senior Offensive Assistant

A.J. Neibel - Head Strength and Conditioning

Positions yet to be filled include DB coach, QB coach, and Assistant Defensive Line coach. Former DB coach Derrick Ansley left to take the Co-Defensive Coordinator position at University of Tennessee. Former QB coach Brian Callahan took the Offensive Coordinator job with the Bengals. He was followed by RB coach Jemal Singleton.

Buckner spent 2018 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to that he was the DL coach for the Arizona Cardinals for five seasons (2013-17), his first NFL job. Buckner played 12 years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1994-96), Cincinnati Bengals (1997), San Francisco 49ers (1998-2000) and Carolina Panthers (2001-06), appearing in 174 games and making 127 starts.

Wilson has been a running backs coach for 26 years, 21 years of which came in the NFL. He coached under Jon Gruden in Tampa in 2002-03. Later he would coach running backs with the Steelers for seven years (2007-2013). He spent last season with the Arizona Cardinals, his second stint in Arizona (2004-06). Prior to his return to Arizona, spent two seasons (2016-17) with the Cleveland Browns, two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2014-15).

Taver Johnson joins the Raiders straight out the college ranks where he coached the past 13 years. He was most recently the cornerbacks coach at Ohio State where he was for one season. He spent 2017 as Defensive Coordinator at Temple. Prior to that he spent three seasons as cornerbacks coach at Purdue.

Morton should be a familiar name. He had been with the Raiders for nine years from 1997-2004, including being Gruden’s wide receivers coach in his first stint in Oakland. He most recently was the Offensive Coordinator with the Jets. Prior to that he spent two seasons as the WR coach with the Saints. In total, Morton has coached 17 seasons in the NFL.

Neibel will enter his second stint with the Raiders. He originally spent six seasons (2003-08) as Raiders strength and conditioning/sports medicine associate. He spent the past two seasons (2017-18) with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the previous six seasons (2011-16) with the Atlanta Falcons.
