Report: 49ers are not picking up Pierre Garçon’s option for 2019

Things were moving this way and now it seems more and more imminent that Garçon will be on a different team next year.

There’s been quite a bit of chatter on the fate of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Pierre Garçon, and we have another indication that he won’t be in the red and gold for 2019. Mike Garafolo was on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football and reported the 49ers will not pick up Garçon’s 2019 option.

The move comes with $7.2 million in dead money per Over The Cap. The move will also clear an estimated $500,000 in salary cap space when factoring in the 51-highest salaries.

Garçon was one of the many free agent signings for the 49ers when Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch were brought onboard in 2017. His 500 yards in eight games for the 2017 season put him on pace to to have a 1,000 yards until a neck injury put him out of commission. There were once again optimism for him in 2018 with the rise of Jimmy Garoppolo, but Garoppolo’s knee injury early in the season and Garçon himself having difficulties staying healthy made those hopes vanish. Garçon played the same amount of games in 2018, but managed just over half the yards of his previous year with 286. The younger wide receivers like Kendrick Bourne and Dante Pettis gained opportunities in Garçon’s absence and now factor into the upcoming season.

The 49ers had tried to trade Garçon during the season before the trade deadline, but were unable to get a partner, despite league interest.

The NFL wide receiver class is quite weak this year. The 49ers were looking at Antonio Brown and he’s under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Per Garoffolo, Garçon wants to keep playing, so with the lack of talent this year, he may find a team rather quickly.

Brown and any trades aside, the floor is to the youngsters.
