Will he bounce back in 2019?
Patrick Robinson is a familiar name to most New Orleans Saints fans, even those who discovered the Who Dat Nation after the team won the Super Bowl in 2010. PRob was the team’s very first draft pick after being crowned World Champions. His first stint with the Saints was largely viewed as a bad period and he was allowed to walk in free agency after the 2014 season. With just over 4 years of gameplay experience, Robinson signed with the, then, San Diego Chargers. Assigned to slot duty and only lining up on the boundary sparingly, Robinson found his groove as a nickel back.
The veteran cornerback used the 2016 and 2017 seasons, with Colts and Eagles respectively, to establish himself as a solid slot performer and pick up a Super Bowl ring along the way. The Saints took notice and reunited with the 30 year old cornerback in an attempt to sure up slot play. Unfortunately, Robinson’s 2018 season was cut short due to an ankle injury sustained late in the week 3 game against the Atlanta Falcons.
Though PRob was not the liability that he appeared to be in his early days, he did not standout in his limited playing time. That said, Robinson mostly blended in while his teammates on the boundary got toasted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ wide receivers in week 1 and Falcons rookie Calvin Ridley in week 3. We can only imagine how much better the pass defense would have been if Robinson had remained healthy and the team had acquired Eli Apple anyway.

In limited playing time in 2018, Robinson accumulated 5 tackles with passes defended or interceptions. PRob missed both opportunities to play against the team with which he won a Super Bowl ring. With 3 years remaining of his 4 year, 20 million contract with the Saints and P.J. Williams possibly becoming a free agent, it is assumed that Robinson will resume his starting role in the slot.
