The Boardroom: Which Chiefs stay and which Chiefs go?

Welcome to the Arrowhead Pride boardroom.

With the 2018 season in rearview mirror, we’re eagerly anticipating free agency and the NFL Draft down in the lab. This week, on the AP Laboratory, we launched a series we’ll be doing throughout the next few months called “The Boardroom,” where we’ll be making decisions as if we’re in charge of the Chiefs.

This week we went down the roster and set a course for every position.

Who do we release? Who are we re-signing? Who are we targeting? What range are we looking to attack certain positions in the draft?

We laid it all out this week. Here are a few highlights:

Quarterback

Patrick Mahomes is perfect. That is all. Moving on.

Running back

While some are concerned with the running back position, we are keeping it a low priority. We’ll look to add someone low cost like Jacksonville Jaguar Corey Grant in free agency if the opportunity presents itself. As for the draft? There are too many other issues to address for a day one or two asset to be invested here.

Tight end

We are dropping Demetrius Harris. We aren’t pursuing a deal with him. Perhaps a low-cost option like Cincinnati’s C.J. Uzomah in free agency. As for the draft, the value could be tremendous in round two at tight end, as it is a deep position. We’ll have no issue taking a guy like Irv Smith if he’s there.

Offensive line

We’re wishing Mitch Morse the best of luck and moving on. We’re also not being overly aggressive in adding an interior offensive lineman into the mix. With Cameron Erving, Austin Wylie, Austin Reiter, Laurent-Duvernay Tardif, Kahlil McKenzie, Jimmy Murray and Ryan Hunter as options in the interior, we feel comfortable that there’s enough there that we can have success and depth with that group.

Defensive line

So many decisions to make here. We’re tagging Dee Ford and letting him prove it another year. Justin Houston’s time in Kansas City is coming to an end. We are actively shopping him at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in the hopes that someone will make the move to take on the $14 million on his that would go with him to his next destination. We made a surprise cut on the defensive line that saved over $2 million in cap space. With that space, we targeted the recently cut Vinny Curry to help bolster the pass rush.

Cornerback

We’re letting Steven Nelson walk in free agency. Not all that difficult of a move. Same with Orlando Scandrick. As for addressing the position, we’re investing one of our top picks at a corner. We’re keeping an eye Janoris Jenkins’ status with the New York Giants. If he’s released, we’re looking at him as a buy-low option.

Safety

We’re waving goodbye to Eric Berry. He’s meant a lot to this organization and city for a long time. With Berry’s status being so up in the air, it’s hard for us to trust that we can keep him. We’re giving him a post-June 1 designation and earmarking his cap space to sign our rookie class (after June 1) and our reserve.

We also changed the complexion of the rest of the safety group with a massive overhaul, set a plan for some extensions and cut a few players that might surprise you. You can hear it all on this week’s episode of the AP Laboratory:
