To kick off our offseason round table discussions, the Mile High Report staff discuss what big needs the Denver Broncos should address in free agency.
In just a few weeks, the lull of post-Super Bowl football will ignite full flame as teams across the National Football League are poised to spend money like it is going out of style once free agency kicks off on March 13.
According to Over the Cap, the Denver Broncos currently have $37 million dollars available at their disposal. However, that number will certainly change when the Joe Flacco trade is made official at the beginning of the new league year. That figure does represent the $5 million dollars in savings from declining their team-option on linebacker Brandon Marshall or any other potential cuts or restructures that will certainly happen.
The franchise won’t be able to fill every need in free agency or should they be expected too. At any case, have no doubts that the Broncos’ biggest needs will most certainly be prioritized. That being said, don’t be surprised if they add two or three quality starters to next year’s roster and a few depth players. By doing that, John Elway and his staff can enter the 2019 NFL Draft with a some peace of mind and a bit more flexibility.
To kickoff our annual offseason round table discussions, I asked the Mile High Report staff — “What are the biggest needs the Broncos should address in free agency?”
Joe Rowles:
If Elway is looking to emulate an area where he had success last year, I think he’d be wise to build an All-22 depth chart where the Broncos can enter the draft without a single glaring immediate need. That would mean boundary corner and the offensive line need significant attention. Another receiver and tight end should also be considered, depending on what the plans is for Emmanuel Sanders.
Scotty Payne:
There are plenty of needs. In no specific order here are positions that need immediate upgrades: starters at outside cornerback, strong safety, and a three-down inside linebacker. The team could also use help at any position on the offensive line, as well as nose tackle and tight end.
Taylor Kothe:
I pretty much agree with Scotty’s list, but in specific order & without assuming any re-signings the priorities for me would be starters at inside linebacker, right tackle, nose tackle and boundary corner. After that I’d look for depth and potential upgrades at center, tight end and strong safety. A third outside linebacker, additional receiver and defensive end would be last on my needs list.
Tim Lynch:
In my opinion, the two biggest needs heading into free agency would be an elite inside linebacker and a starting cornerback.
Pete Baron:
Defense is where the major holes are. Inside linebacker and cornerback are by far the biggest needs on this team. We need someone who can cover a tight end and outside of Chris Harris Jr., we really only have Isaac Yiadom to be hopeful about at corner. Our offensive line wasn’t all that bad, neither are our wide receivers and tight ends, and our running backs are great. Resources should be focused on getting starters at the two defensive positions I mentioned.
Ian St. Clair:
Based on my colleague’s answers, this will sound like a broken record at this point, but: Three-down middle linebacker, starting strong safety, defensive tackle, right tackle, cornerback and tight end. Adam and I talked about our answers on the MHR Radio Podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Stitcher),
Adam Malnati:
I’ll take “middle linebackers and corners” for $1000, Alex!
It’s no surprise that an elite inside linebacker and boundary corner top wish list of needs for the Broncos to address in free agency. Those would be the two positions I would want to see improved upon as well. Additionally, upgrades at right tackle, strong safety and nose tackle appear to next in the mix, with some consideration given to upgrading offensive positions such as tight end and wide receiver.
On the flip side, I would put defensive end a little bit higher on the list than most. Shelby Harris, Derek Wolfe and Adam Gotsis are entering the final years of their respective contracts. The Broncos will have plenty of cap space in 2020 and beyond, but I believe it would be highly unlikely to see all three of the aforementioned on the roster after next season. I wouldn’t invest any free agent resources at defensive end and would opt for selecting a prospect in a deep defensive line class for the future.
So Broncos Country, what do you think are the Broncos’ top needs to address in free agency? Vote in the poll below and make your voice heard in the comments section.
