The Jacksonville Jaguars need a quarterback and the world seems to have Nick Foles pegged to end up in teal by the end of next week. If that happens, it changes the landscape of the 2019 NFL Draft — teams typically don’t sign a high priced quarterback one month and then spend a pick at the top of the first round on another.
That’s why Dane Brugler and Daniel Popper of The Athletic predict the Jaguars to use the No. 7 overall pick on a piece to rebuild their offense.
We’re done with the NFL Combine and The Athletic recently asked each of their beat writers to provide a mock draft pick with Brugler providing analysis on each one. And it’s Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson who is going to Jacksonville.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa
All signs point to the Jaguars signing Nick Foles when the league year begins March 13. The next step for the front office will be adding offensive pieces so the former Super Bowl MVP has some semblance of a supporting cast around him. Hockenson is a complete tight end who can be a difference-maker as a rookie, both as a pass catcher and a run blocker. He fits a glaring need for the Jags. — Daniel Popper
Dane’s Take: With Foles expected to be in the fold in Jacksonville, this pick might come down to an impact skill player like Hockenson or an upgrade on the offensive line. The Jaguars desperately need a consistent chain-mover for their offense and Hockenson can be an impact player, both as a blocker and pass catcher. He would be an ideal fit in Jacksonville.
