The Arizona Cardinals have been busy.
They have signed a cornerback, an inside and outside linebacker, a tight end, an offensive lineman and then traded for their biggest piece… a very good offensive tackle in Marcus Gilbert.
However, nothing they have done has mattered.
No, not in the sense that it won’t make a difference in 2019, but in the sense that the moves of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 offseason won’t change how they attack the 2019 NFL Draft.
While they have added all these positions, the only position that seems unlikely to be drafted highly at this time is an inside linebacker.
No, instead the Arizona Cardinals have invested in making sure they are a competent enough team in 2019, but not done anything to change the needs of the team.
They still need help at every level.
They signed a cornerback in Robert Alford, they need a cornerback. Byron Murphy or Deandre Baker?
They signed Terrell Suggs, they need another pass rusher. Nick Bosa, Brian Burns?
They traded for Marcus Gilbert but there offensive line seems bad still. Jawaan Taylor or Dalton Risner?
J.R. Sweezy was signed but they need a guard. Chris Lindstrom or Garrett Bradbury?
Charles Clay was signed, but their tight end rooms reads like a cautionary tale. Noah Fant or Irv Smith?
They just signed Kevin White. That means nothing if N’Keal Harry or Marquis Brown are available.
They have roughly $12 million in salary left, factoring in the 2019 NFL Draft salary… that’s oddly or maybe coincidentally what it would cost to move on from Josh Rosen if they decided to make a move for Kyler Murray.
What the Cardinals have done this offseason is make it so they don’t have to worry about adding a specific position, outside of defensive line, if they don’t add more defensive line talent my fire Steve Keim rhetoric will continue in 2019. No, instead they have set themselves up to foster young talent at any position. They can use the first pick, much to my own chagrin, however they see fit, no matter if Nick Bosa sits there waiting.
This offseason has done nothing to give us an idea of what the Cardinals intend to do in the 2019 NFL Draft… And that’s okay.
