Arizona Cardinals having fun with the excitement and uncertainty of the first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft

What the Arizona Cardinals are doing is a mystery.

They have made a number of free agency moves, but only one comes with any eye towards beyond 2019.

No, instead the Arizona Cardinals have made a bunch of signings that will allow them to be flexible and aggressive in the 2019 NFL Draft.

They also have enjoyed the spotlight.

As Blake so expertly breaks down each week on the Cardinals “Flight Plan” they have been doing a lot of work at the 2019 NFL Combine to make things hard for other teams to understand where they are heading.

They are enjoying their time in the spotlight and General Manager Steve Keim has said as much:

“We are embracing that right now and we think there is a lot of value in that pick,” he said. “We’re actually having a lot of fun with all the excitement. It’s great for the organization, it’s great for the National Football League.”

Keim was the GM when the organization was last in the offseason spotlight. After their 2015 run to the NFC Championship Game, the Cardinals came into 2016 as favorites in the NFC.

We know things didn’t go according to plan and it’s been back to being an afterthought among NFL teams since that offseason.

While having the first pick in the draft is a sign of failure the previous season, it also comes with a hoard of media attention. If also gives the Cardinals a chance to flex their muscles.

They’ve created a real media frenzy with their overt flirtation with Kyler Murray.

They are trying to drive up the cost of the first pick but they’re also trying to remain in the NFL spotlight as long as possible.

What their intentions are we’ll know as we get closer to the draft, but for now, they’re just enjoying relevancy again.
