Bills discussed DE Trey Flowers, but he’s signing in Detroit, per reports

The Bills are eyeing pass rushers.

The Buffalo Bills have held internal discussions about signing blue-chip free-agent defensive end Trey Flowers, according to ESPN reporter Josina Anderson. Flowers, who ranked fifth on SB Nation’s 2019 free agent rankings, is entering the prime of his career at 25 years old.

Anderson mentioned that the discussions were still early, mostly on the level of gathering opinions about the player. She also mentioned that the Bills held similar discussions about players who ultimately ended up under a franchise tag. That list, which includes Frank Clark, Jadeveon Clowney, Dee Ford, and Demarcus Lawrence, means that Flowers is the best-available pass rusher on the market.

Flowers only played in one game in his rookie season after suffering a shoulder injury, but played 45 of 48 games over the next three years, starting 37 of them. The New England Patriots used Flowers all over the line on their hybrid defense, and he recorded 21 sacks in those three seasons (7.5 in the 2018 season). Flowers had 57 tackles (32 solo), with nine tackles for loss in 2018.

The Bills currently have starters Jerry Hughes, Trent Murphy, and Shaq Lawson under contract for the 2019 season. Hughes and Lawson will be free agents after 2019, though, so the Bills could add a replacement ahead of schedule if they ended up signing Flowers.
