Detroit Lions still talking with T.J. Lang about his future with team

The door has not been shut on T.J. Lang’s future with the Lions.

A few weeks ago when the Detroit Lions released Glover Quin, Bruce Ellington and Nicholas Grigsby, one potential name was off that list. Some believed T.J. Lang was on the chopping block due to his ballooning cost ($11.5 million cap hit, just $2.7 million in dead cap) and his health issues on the field. The fact that Lang was not on that list of cuts, some theorized, meant that perhaps he still has a future with the team.

Lions general manager Bob Quinn addressed that issue on Wednesday, but he was far from committal on Lang’s status in 2019.

“Everyone’s kind of different in terms of the evaluation process on each player,” Quinn said. “Some players you can have that evaluation done in a couple weeks after the season. Some guys linger a little bit longer, and I’d say T.J. is in that category of someone that we’re still kind of going through the process thinking about what we want to do and talking with T.J. a little bit here and there, but those conversations between myself and him we’ll kind of keep private.”

So it appears the Lions are still in the evaluation process of Lang. Does that mean Lang will be around next year? Does it mean they’re trying to work on a contract restructuring, something that Lang suggested he’d be open to?

It’s obvious Quinn won’t be revealing any of those private conversations, but the fact that the two sides are talking suggests serious interest in bringing him back.
