The Kist & Solak Show #82!
Howie Roseman has been quite the busy little bee. It should come as no surprise; the Philadelphia Eagles’ needed to “change some dollar bills” as Scarface would say. What was a surprise was the return of Super Bowl hero Brandon Graham. A pleasant one at that.
Here’s what Roseman has since the 2019 NFL Combine started:
- Extended/restructured Jason Kelce (3-year, $33M)
- Re-singed Brandon Graham (3-year, $40M)
- Re-signed Isaac Seumalo (3-year, cash yet to be released)
- Restructured Lane Johnson (waiting for details)
Updade: We have new details on the Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson contracts.
Update: this move actually creates $8.2M in cap space for 2019, while Jason Kelce’s extension creates $4M in cap space in 2019. Philly creating flexibility in advance of free agency.

There was also the expected non-tagging of Nick Foles and the option of Timmy Jernigan not being picked up. All told, the Eagles no longer need to be concerned with being under the cap once the new year league opens in 2019. As if there was ever any doubt. There’s still very little wiggle room to splash the pot in free agency.
Roseman has a talent for not kicking the can but setting up at a distance and then shooting it when it’s required. Those tricks may not work with the same effectiveness for much longer. Keeping talent is expensive and things will get even tighter when (not if) Carson Wentz signs a mega-deal.
For now, the Eagles still have a window where those chickens won’t roost for a couple of years. Even with all the spending, Roseman has a keen eye for preempting the market, which helps. Another part of keeping that window clean of chicken.. poop.. depends on how well the Eagles draft.
Part of the evaluation process that leads to that success is the NFL Combine, which is the main topic of The Kist & Solak Show #82. This is a perfect compliment to the “Winners & Losers” pieces that I wrote for each day of the Combine.
