ESPN’s latest mock draft has a pick for the Eagles that doesn’t make sense

With the NFL Combine over, ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay released Version 3.0 of his 2019 NFL mock draft on Wednesday. McShay’s Version 2.0 had the Eagles taking a defensive tackle while his Version 1.0 had Philadelphia ending up with a cornerback. Truth be told, neither of his previous two picks seemed realistic for Philly. Sadly, nor does his latest one:

25. Philadelphia Eagles

Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple

We all know the Eagles want to fix the secondary, and while the Philly faithful might be clamoring for Greedy Williams here, I like Ya-Sin’s full skill toolbox. He impressed me at the combine and deserves first-round consideration.

Sigh.

This is the second straight ESPN mock draft where they have the Eagles reaching to draft a cornerback in the first round. Mel Kiper’s latest edition had the Eagles taking Trayvon Mullen.

Why?! Just stop.

The Eagles aren’t drafting a first round cornerback. (The exception is if someone unexpected falls to their pick at No. 25.) Howie Roseman even downplayed the possibility recently and, no, it wasn’t a smokescreen. It was just an honest assessment of the Eagles’ cornerback room. Quote via NBCSP:

“We’ve invested a lot of draft picks at that position and you have to give your young players a chance to grow. You have to give everyone, really, a chance to grow in their roles. We’re looking forward to them all taking another step, those young guys.”

Even if the Eagles WERE going to draft a corner, Ya-Sin just doesn’t seem to make sense at No. 25. His name is awesome, yes, but he’s not even thought of as one of the top corners in this year’s class. Two out of five analysts from The Draft Network don’t even have him in their top 10 cornerbacks. The other three have him ranked between the sixth and eight best player at his position. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein graded Ya-Sin out as a player who has a “chance to become [an] NFL starter.”

McShay’s mock also has the Eagles passing over extremely athletic edge rusher Brian Burns, who falls to No. 30 in this simulation. Philly is not skipping over a highly rated pass rushing prospect to reach for a corner in the first. Come on. Can we at least make the picks somewhat realistic?
