Emmitt Thomas, the longtime Kansas City Chiefs player and coach who recently retired from the coaching ranks, received a well-deserved shoutout at the NFL Scouting Combine on Monday, the final day of workouts in Indianapolis.
New Orleans Saints defensive assistant Peter Giunta cited Thomas’ story as inspiration for the defensive backs before their workouts.

GIUNTA: “We had a guy—just retired, a great friend, 51 years in the league—by the name of Emmitt Thomas. He was an undrafted free agent out of a small school called Bishop College in Texas. Played for 13 seasons, intercepted 58 balls. That’s why I tell you about taking the ball away. He’s in the Hall of Fame. He’s in the Hall of Fame, coached for 38 years in the league. You know why? He was very humble, he always did the right thing. That’s why he lasted 51 years in this league. If you want to make it in this league, it doesn’t matter how you get here. It’s what you do once you get here. You got to respect the process, and it’s a daily grind. And the guys that are able to accept that daily grind and do what they’re supposed to do day after day are the guys that survive.”
Thomas was a member of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl IV team and has his No. 18 retired by the organization. It was fun to see his story told to the incoming defensive backs.
