Giants roster moves: C Spencer Pulley re-signed

Spencer Pulley (77)

The Giants have now brought back both Pulley and Jon Halapio

The New York Giants continued to try and strengthen their offensive line Monday, reaching a three-year, $9.6 million deal with center Spencer Pulley.

Pulley’s agency quickly took to Twitter to confirm the deal.

Pulley, 25, will get $2.325 million in guaranteed money, per Dan Duggan of The Athletic. The Giants made the signing official Monday afternoon, though they did not announce contract details.

The Giants on Friday announced the re-signing of Jon Halapio, an exclusive rights free agent who opened 2018 as the starting center. GM Dave Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur often discussed Halapio’s loss, but Pulley did a nice job taking over midway through the season.

Pulley, 6-foot-4 and 308 pounds, entered the NFL out of Vanderbilt as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers in 2016. As a rookie, he saw action in all 16 games at center, left guard and right guard and provided protection on special teams. The following year, the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and Pulley started all 16 games at center and led all Chargers offensive players with 1,056 offensive snaps.

Pulley was waived by Los Angeles on Sept. 1 and was awarded to the Giants the following day.

Pulley ended up starting nine games and was the middle man on a group that played better over the second half of the season. Pulley ranked 23rd out of 39 qualifying centers graded by Pro Football Focus.

Perhaps the Giants are setting up a center competition between Halapio and Pulley. Both have the ability to play guard if necessary, so one could be looked at as quality interior offensive line depth.
