The NFL’s “legal tampering” period is set to begin today.
Legal tampering is perhaps the oddest phrase the NFL has ever coined since tampering is illegal in the league. But ever since 2013, the league has allowed teams to start negotiating with players for two days before the free agency period officially begins.
The NFL typically instructs that no deals can be struck during the legal tampering period, but that is an unenforceable rule. If two sides are negotiating, how can you prevent them from striking a deal? So we likely will hear news of teams reaching agreements with free agents today and tomorrow.
