Can everyone just calm down?
The NFL’s legal tampering period for free agency began Monday, and there hasn’t been much reported action from the Buccaneers. Even with the new league year officially set to begin Wednesday, there isn’t much buzz about Tampa Bay doing anything significant.
And you know what? That’s just fine. In fact, it’s actually the right course of action for the Bucs right now.
In the last two days, other teams in the league have been overspending like crazy. Kwon Alexander, Trent Brown and Tyrann Mathieu are just a few of the guys that have gotten massive contracts in the last 48 hours. Tampa Bay would’ve liked to have Alexander back, but not at the price tag that made him the highest-paid inside linebacker in the league. Mathieu was another intriguing target, but he got more money than the team could have (and should have, really) paid for him.
These huge contracts don’t fit the current situation that the Bucs find themselves in. They don’t have much cap space to begin with, so overpaying for the likes of those guys just wouldn’t have made sense. Jason Licht and his staff would be far better suited to find cheaper veterans to plug in where the team has needs. If the team stays patient and finds some of those guys — potentially ones that have played under Arians and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles in the past — that would be preferred.
Getting some veterans on low-end contracts at linebacker, cornerback, right guard and potentially wide receiver (?) would be a win for Licht in this free agency period. We’ve seen the Bucs try to make big splashes in recent years. They’ve been the “winners” of the offseason plenty of times. What has that led to on the field? Nothing notable at all. Signings such as Chris Baker, DeSean Jackson, Vinny Curry and Beau Allen in the last two offseasons has led to back-to-back 5-11 seasons.
The Bucs are being patient, as they should be. Let’s see how things play out in the coming weeks. By then, the team should also have a clearer idea of what to do in the upcoming draft. So, can we all take a step back and calm down now?
