Packers re-sign DL Fadol Brown to one-year contract, per report

The deal avoids any hassle with exclusive-rights free agency.

The Green Bay Packers have made their first signing of the 2019 free agency period. According to Michael Cohen of The Athletic, the team has re-signed defensive lineman Fadol Brown to a one-year contract.

The team claimed Brown on waivers from the Oakland Raiders late last season, and he made a few flash plays over the 2018 season’s final month. With just one year of accrued experience towards free agency, Brown was scheduled to be an exclusive-rights free agent when the season began, and the Packers could have offered him a one-year tender for the league minimum salary to maintain exclusive contract negotiation rights.

It is likely that this contract agreement is for the same type of deal: one year for the league minimum. It simply means that both sides were content with the arrangement and that Brown’s camp sees no need to try to negotiate for a longer deal — this provides him with an opportunity to remain with the team through the offseason and training camp with the chance to earn a roster spot in the preseason.

The Packers have six other exclusive-rights free agents on their roster: Reggie Gilbert, Jake Kumerow, Justin McCray, Lucas Patrick, Adam Pankey, and Robert Tonyan. The team must submit tenders to them before the start of free agency on March 13th in order to retain those exclusive negotiating rights.
