Peter Schrager Mock Draft 1.0 - Browns select CB Deandre Baker

Nation’s top corner could pair nicely with Denzel Ward in defensive backfield.

The Cleveland Browns picked a good year to look for defensive help in the NFL Draft.

This year’s draft class is expected to be deep in defensive talent and the Browns need more weapons at every level of the defense.

One area that Browns general manager John Dorsey may target with the team’s first-round selection, currently No. 17 overall, is the cornerback position. The club is set on one side after selecting Denzel Ward last season, but can use another top-line player across from Ward.

Which is why NFL Network’s Peter Schrager has the Browns looking in that direction in his first mock draft of the year:

No. 17: Cleveland Browns - Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia: It’s hard not to know and like Baker’s game if you watch SEC football on Saturdays. With much better play speed than track speed, he logged seven interceptions in his time at Georgia and went two years without surrendering a touchdown. Denzel Ward and Baker could form a nice little defensive back duo for the Dawg Pound.

Baker was the recipient of the Jm Thorpe Award as the country’s top defensive back this past season, after posting 40 tackles, two interceptions and leading the Bulldogs with 10 pass breakups.

He played 36 games for Georgia and finished his collegiate career with 116 total tackles and seven interceptions.

According to The Draft Network, Baker:

projects favorably as a press man corner in the NFL. If allowed to play within the contact window and disrupt route releases, Baker can be an impact starter from the get go. With some concerns centered around his long speed, Baker is a more favorable fit in a Cover 2 heavy defensive system, where he can be afforded deep help to ensure he’s not compromised vertically in the event he misses his jam at the LOS. Baker can make an immediate impact in the NFL.

What do you think Browns fans? Would you like to see Dorsey select Baker if he is available with the 17th pick?
