Report: Bills interested in recently released TE Dwayne Allen

The veteran spent the last two seasons with the New England Patriots

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly one of four teams who have already expressed interest in adding recently-released veteran tight end Dwayne Allen. The 29-year-old veteran played with the New England Patriots for the last two seasons, making a total of 13 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown in two seasons with New England.

Buffalo’s interest in Allen was reported by Josina Anderson, who also noted that the Detroit Lions, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins have expressed interest in the former third-round draft choice of the Indianapolis Colts. Anderson’s report lines up with a post on Pro Football Talk by Charean Williams, who said that Allen already had four visits lined up this week after his release. Combining the two reports, one can easily speculate that those four teams Anderson named have set up visits with Allen.

According to additional info from Anderson, Allen will meet with Baltimore first on Tuesday before flying to Buffalo Tuesday night. That could change, of course.

Standing at 6’3” and 265 lbs, Allen is a willing blocker with great size and strength for the tight end position. For his career, he has 139 receptions for 1,564 yards and 20 touchdowns, with most of that production coming as a member of the Colts. His high-water mark in both receptions and receiving yards came in his rookie year back in 2012, when he made 45 receptions for 521 yards. He caught a career-high eight touchdown passes in 2014.

Buffalo has also been linked to tight end Jesse James, an unrestricted free agent who played with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. After releasing veteran Charles Clay, who subsequently signed with the Arizona Cardinals, it’s clear that the Bills need to add talent at the position, and they seem intent on adding a veteran tight end prior to the NFL Draft in April.
