Report: Browns re-sign cornerback Phillip Gaines

Waiver wire pickup from last season returns to team on a one-year deal

The Cleveland Browns saw one cornerback leave in free agency on Friday but kept one in town for another year.

Shortly after the news broke the cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun was signing with the Houston Texans, a report came out that the Browns were re-signing cornerback Phillip Gaines to a one-year deal:

The Browns claimed Gaines off waivers from the Buffalo Bills 10 weeks into the 2018 season. At the time of his release, Gaines led the NFL with 131 penalty yards. The fifth-year veteran played in four games with the Browns, seeing a little bit of action on defense (40 plays) and a little bit on special teams (54 plays).

Gaines has made 22 starts in his NFL career since being selected in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft by current Browns general manager John Dorsey, who was Kansas City’s general manager at the time.
