Report: Golden Tate, Giants agree to multi-year contract worth $37.5 million

Former Eagles WR is staying in the NFC East.

Former Eagles wide receiver Golden Tate has signed with the New York Giants in free agency on a 4-year, $37.5 million deal worth $23 million fully guaranteed. Tate’s social media posting the past few months have alluded to the fact that he wouldn’t be returning to Philadelphia, but now we know for sure.

The Eagles sent a third round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to the Lions for Tate just ahead of the 2018 NFL trade deadline. Philly struggled to effectively incorporate him into the offense, however.

In his eight games to finish the regular season, Tate gradually became a regular target for Carson Wentz (and then Nick Foles), despite a questionable quote by OC Mike Groh who called it “challenging” to get the WR involved. Someone in their ninth year in the league and whose excelled with his two previous squads should be relatively easy to work into the rotation, but I digress...

Tate started in four of his eight games for Philly, making catches for 278 yards, and also filled in on special teams as a punt returner. During the Eagles postseason, the wideout had seven catches for 64 yards, and one game-winning touchdown that, regardless, will keep the name Tate known in Philadelphia for quite awhile

After the Super Bowl, and once teams started signing players to extensions, Tate sarcastically quipped that he didn’t know teams were able to re-sign players before free agency, indicating the Eagles weren’t making their intentions known.

He then sporadically throughout the offseason went on to note that he wouldn’t mind playing in New England, and a host of other cities.

Tate also seemed relatively bitter when news broke that the Eagles were trading to return DeSean Jackson to Philly just ahead of free agency opening up.

BLG Note: Oh my god, Dave Gettleman is truly the gift that keeps giving. Yeah, the Giants are REALLY rebuilding by signing a 30-year-old receiver who ranked dead last in Football Outsiders’ DYAR stat last year! This news is actually great for the Eagles because it helps Philly potentially acquire another (fourth-round?) compensatory pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. It also potentially cancels out a fifth-round pick comp pick the Giants were set to receive. Say it with me: #LongLiveDaveGettleman!
