Report: Landon Collins to sign with Washington

Landon Collins is staying in the NFC East

Landon Collins won’t be a New York Giant in 2019, but he won’t be going far. Per Josina Anderson of ESPN, Collins will sign with the Washington Redskins.

The Giants balked at paying nearly $12 million for Collins on the franchise tag, but it appears Washington had little hesitation paying top of the market price for a “box” safety. Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Collins’s deal with be worth a maximum of $84 million over six years.

Collins’ deal reportedly includes $45 million in guarantees.

By average annual value (not the best metric for a contract, but it’s usually the first we get), Eric Berry’s $13 million per year topped all safeties, but Collins is now at $14 million per year. This sets up a fairly high bar for the free agent safety market, which the Giants could be involved in to replace Collins. There were also reports that Tyrann Mathieu has received an offer worth $9.5 million per year to stay with the Houston Texans. The safety market does not look like last year’s.

Questions were raised about Collins’s ability in coverage and the Giants will now get to test that theory out twice a year.
