Teddy Bridgewater is Saints biggest contract decision

Not the biggest contract, but the biggest decision.

We’ve spent a lot of time already on the biggest looming contract decisions the New Orleans Saints are faced with this free agency. Only 4% of CSC voters believed the most important issue for the Saints is a decision at quarterback beyond Drew Brees. Regardless of what CSC believes, Bleacher Report believes the biggest contract decision for the Saints this free agency is what to do with Teddy Bridgwater:

Like Brady, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is entering the final year of his contract. Brees turned 40 in January, but he’s fighting off age just as well as Brady, if not better. It’s unlikely he’ll want to retire within the next couple of years, so New Orleans should work on getting an extension done now.

There are two big reasons for this. One is that an extension might lower Brees’ 2019 cap hit of $33.5 million. That, in turn, could help free up some cash to extend with star wide receiver Michael Thomas, who has one year left on his rookie deal.

New Orleans is projected to have just under $10 million in cap space, so even if Thomas’ deal gets postponed, the cap space would be handy.

The other reason is that it would help give the Saints some idea of their time frame for finding Brees’ successor. If Brees commits through, say, 2021, the Saints could stockpile draft picks in order to go after a guy like Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

There is a lot to unpack there.

The Saints could very well spread out Drew’s 2019 cap hit, but considering the financial cap freedom that’s in the not-so-distant future, it might be smarter just to ride this out. At the same time, the Saints window for winning is now.

And then, of course, Bleacher Report just throws out a little nugget about Trevor Lawrence.

LSU fans or otherwise, Who Dat Nation is full of SEC fans, but I’m sure Saints would love it if the Clemson star QB ended up as the quarterback of the future in New Orleans.
