Team is without a first-round selection at the moment, but still have eight picks to use in 2019 NFL Draft.
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey was hard at work reshaping the roster in the opening days of the new league year.
Dorsey added some depth along the offensive line, increased the talent on the defensive line with Sheldon Richardson and Olivier Vernon and, most notably, swung a deal for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
The trade for Beckham cost Cleveland it’s first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, the 17th overall pick, and leaves the Browns without a selection in the first round for the first time since 2008.
The Browns still have eight draft picks, so let’s catch up on where they currently stand, according to the team’s website, along with a look at some of the players selected at those spots in recent years.
Cleveland’s first selection will come in the second round with the 49th overall pick. The most notable players selected at that slot since 2010 include defensive lineman Jarran Reed (Seattle Seahawks in 2016), who had 10.5 sacks last season; guard Mitch Morse, selected (Kansas City Chiefs in 2015), who signed this week with the Buffalo Bills; and defensive tackle Jonathan Hankins (New York Giants in 2013), who is currently on his third NFL team.
In the third round, the Browns will be selecting at No. 80. The most notable players at this slot include defensive lineman Adolphus Washington (Buffalo Bills in 2016), who has made just 21 starts and is currently a backup with the Cincinnati Bengals; and center J.D. Walton (Denver Broncos in 2010), who started 52 games but who has been out of the league since 2015.
In the fourth round, the Browns will be selecting at No. 119. Things get a bit more interesting here, as linebacker Anthony Hitchens (Dallas Cowboys in 2014) has made 63 career starts, including 15 last season for the Chiefs; and running back Tarik Cohen (Chicago Bears in 2017) who was a First Team All-Pro selection in 2018.
The fifth round looks to be a busy one as the Browns hold three selections - picks No. 144, No. 155 and No. 170. The most notable players selected at No. 144 include wide receiver Kenny Stills (New Orleans Saints in 2013) and linebacker Telvin Smith (Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014), who made the Pro Bowl in 2017.
At pick No. 155, players who have stood out include offensive lineman Joe Haeg (Indianapolis Colts in 2016) and punter Jeff Locke (Minnesota Vikings in 2013). Selection No. 170 includes players such as guard Eric Kush (Kansas City in 2013), who signed with the Browns last week as a free agent; and ... not much else.
Pick No. 189 continues to be pretty light, with the most notable player being cornerback Anthony Brown (Cowboys in 2016), unless someone wants to count cornerback Charles Gaines, who the Browns selected in 2015.
The Browns will close out draft weekend in the seventh round with selection No. 221. At this stage in the draft, teams are lucky to find a player that will last more than a season or two in the league.
Dorsey may not have the same type of draft weekend this year that he had in 2018, but no one should be surprised if he still doesn’t have a deal or two up his sleeve. If there is a player the team likes, the Browns still have the resources to try and work out a deal to move up in the draft.
The 2019 NFL Draft will take place April 25-27 in Nashville.
