Xavier Ubosi Is a Late-Round Prospect That Could Add Depth To The WR Corps

Hogs Haven takes a look at 2019 NFL Draft prospects that could contribute to the Redskins

Xavier Ubosi, WR
School: University of Alabama - Birmingham | Conference: Conference USA
College Experience: Senior | Age: 25
Height / Weight: 6’2” / 209 lbs
Projected Draft Status: 6th round - UDFA

College Statistics

Player Overview

Xavier Ubosi probably didn’t expect his football career to unfold like this. The Reseda, California, native played JUCO football before receiving offers from six schools. He settled on UAB, a school that was reinstating its football program after a two-year hiatus. Ubosi did not make many catches in his two years at UAB, but when he did he made the most of them. For the 2018 season, he led the FBS with 23.9 yards per catch. He capped his college career with a win against Northern Illinois in the Boca Raton Bowl, posting career best with seven catches, 233 yards, and three touchdowns.

Strengths

  • Great size for the position.
  • Fast, especially for his size, despite slow acceleration and being a long strider.
  • Very good athleticism, showing good leaping ability to snag high passes.
  • Attacks the ball when in the air and had very few drops on tape.
  • Good fakes inside when releasing outside on go routes

Weaknesses

  • He’s old. He’ll be 29 by the end of his rookie contract.
  • Seldom ran anything other than go routes. Can he run the entire route tree?
  • Difficulty breaking down at the top of routes and is slow in and out of breaks.
  • Did not see him make many contested catches or high point the ball.
  • Production is inconsistent. Only had more than four catches in a game twice his senior year and had a quarter of his yards in two games.

Let’s go to the video tape

How He Fits On The Redskins

Although Ubosi has some great physical tools, his inconsistent production and raw technique likely means he will need time before contributing to a WR corps in a significant way. Time is not on his side given he will be 25 years old on draft day. Our WR corps needs some revamping and could use a dose of speed and athleticism. When Paul Richardson went down, we struggled to replace his speed on the outside. With Richardson healthy, Ubosi might be able to provide some speed and athleticism off the bench and compete for a roster spot with players like Robert Davis, Maurice Harris, or Cam Sims. But given the refinement his game needs, that may not be immediate. With no special teams experience, it’s hard to see him making his way onto a team’s roster in his first year. Although he’ll be a long shot to make the roster, if WR is not addressed early in the draft, Ubosi could be a late round option that might be able to compete for a spot at the end of the roster or, at the very least, on the practice squad. If he goes undrafted, he should be targeted as a priority UDFA. We got lucky last year late in the draft at WR. Could it happen again?
